This book does a good job of explaining the basic concepts of how to be more inclusive and think of others. Unfortunately, it's now incredibly dated. Some language in our society has improved, but not everyone understands the underlying concepts - so we now have change on the surface., that doesn't really address the lack of inclusivity. Also, the author used many examples from her own life, and these examples sometimes fall short of an ideal demonstration of her concept. In the concepts section, the author provides a story of an "explain away" in which someone tried to tell her that an experience she had that smacked of being thought of as "less then" by male car salesmen who probably thought a woman wouldn't be a good person to sell a car to. She identifies the person explaining away as a black male. What does the male being black have to do with this? Simply the fact that the explain away-er is not a woman is enough. This same story just wasn't as crystal clear as what many people experience with explain aways.I am sure the author could find people who are willing to share their experiences in an updated version of the book. This would allow her to draw from a greater pool of experience, while also using more real-life stories from people in various groups.Overall, the point the author tries to make about the way in which someone who can't really understand the frustrations of marginalized people, minorities, or other folks who simply aren't understood by the majority in our society is an important one, and it's worth keeping this current to help people truly be able to connect with one another when that is what they are trying to do. The points the author tries to make in this book can make people with the best intentions much more effective at listening and getting along with others.
Easy read. Good reminders. One or two new thoughts made this worth the time. Liked the explanation of the difference between our intent and our impact. Just because we didn't intend harm, doesn't mean we didn't cause harm. Also, includes a great way to explain social injustice to someone who hasn't experienced it.
Wow, this helped me understand I have a long way to go as a well-intentioned person. An easy read with applicable advice.
By the end it's been a little repetitive, but that's not bad. It means there are some general principles to be learned about how comments affect others that can be applied to situations not exactly covered in the 25.
This is an incredibly practical resource and an easy way to get at intent and impact. The core concepts are concise and spot on! I'm going to use several of these with Presbyterian congregations that want to become more culturally effective and go from meaning well to doing well. Maura Cullen breaks it down and makes it doable.
Good information was included in this book, but it was very repetitive in nature. The 35 "things" could have been summarized into about 10-15 things in my opinion. The first chapter, and subsequent two following chapters, provided great detail, action items and preferred actions. The ten concepts provided a great foundation for the rest of the book. Unfortunately, the book could have ended there. As a person of color, I felt like the author was working to compare oppression levels amount identity groups, particularly between racism and discrimination based on sexual identity. This was not effective, nor was a detailed enough description given to better understand the two areas of oppression. For someone who does not understand diversity concepts or doesn't have a strong historical understanding of social justice issues, the book served as a brief book full of "suggested" terms and actions. Overall, I'm appreciative of the work and allyship of the author.
