It's a toss up between Occultation and The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All for my favorite collection from Laird Barron. Both were near impossible for me to put down. While the stories share common elements, each generally marks a different world, different time period and well-defined, complex characters at odds with some bit of cosmic nastiness or another.There are really no duds here, but "Mysterium Tremendum" and "Strappado" were the standouts for me. Stories that stuck with me long after putting the book down, it just doesn't get much better than these in the weird fiction realm. If you're the type of reader who requires everything to be wrapped up in a nice bow and explained to you, Barron's stories might not be your cup of tea. If you like to finish something, put it down, stare blankly at the wall and mutter "Whoa...", then wonder if there's time to go back and read it again, Laird's stuff will be right up your alley.Enjoy the ride.
I am a new comer to the works of Laird, and purchased both this anthology and Imago Sequence at the same time and I love them both. Though I enjoyed the bulk of his stories in this solid helping more than I did in Imago Sequence. Not because Imago Sequence contains less gold then this one, I guess my particular tastes in horror were just satisfied more with these offerings.Barron is a great writer, and I particularly like his characters because they are people who have lived life, both good and bad, and he shows it in his writing. I really also enjoy that like much of Lovecraft inspired fiction his characters don't just go down helplessly in some insanity driven stupor. They go down, you can bet on it, but they do it with teeth bared and fight in their blood till the bitter end. In which ever macabre fashion that may be.Barron just has a knack for pulling you in to a story, taking something simple and making it interesting, and in many cases, terrifying. To date I can say he is one of the best short horror fiction writers that I have read. I'm actually glad I am new to his writings as I still have his two novels and his 3rd anthology to look forward too.Highly recommended! Keep the goodies coming Mr. Barron!
Here's a quick quiz: Does the use of the phrases: "Spam afterbirth" and "Spam placenta" intrigue you or gross you out? If it grosses you out, you may not be weird enough to fully appreciate and enjoy this collection of stories from Laird Barron. Does the idea of a story that reads like it was co-written by Mr. Barron and the late John Updike get your heart beating a little faster or put a dubious, wrinkly old pout on your puss? If you are suffering from the pinched puss, you can stop reading this review because "Occultation" is definitely not a candidate for your next read. On the other hand, if my little quiz amused you and perhaps even brought a chuckle to your throat, then you are likely weird enough for this book of bizarre tales.This collection by LB was even more fun than his other works with which I am familiar. There are themes that I have not seen LB undertake before, for example, an eerie post-apocalyptic mystery/ghost story that keeps the reader on edge right up to the end (and well beyond,to be honest).As always,what sets Barron apart is his writing style. He commands the English language as do few others being published today (Caitlin R. Kiernan comes to mind). His vocabulary, grammar and unique phrasings distinguish his work, not just in his chosen genre, but among those writing in pretty much all genres. I consider him a gift to those of us who enjoy reading,but who thrill to superior writing. Highest recommendation.
I don’t know what it is about Laird Barron’s work that I enjoy so much. Yes, the dude can write. Yes, his characterizations are really good in short formats and his monsters are crazy cool. He also uses a lot of big “old-timey†words and that would usually turn me off, but LB makes it work and gives his stories their own voice and flavor. Dark, brooding and bleak. I realize he may not be for everyone, but I have enjoyed everything that I have ever read by him. This guy is fn good, man. Real fn good.
