A great tool for the CSET. I wouldn't recommend using JUST this product, however. There are several grammatical errors and a few topical errors (e.g., wrong President for a certain Act), but a great product overall. It does give brief explanations for each topic, but doesn't go too in-depth. It follows pretty much in order from the CSET guidelines found on the CSET website, so if you follow the bullet points for the subtests, it goes in conjunction with this guide. I'd recommend purchasing an AP textbook for each subject in addition to this guide (I used Barron's AP guides for World History, U.S. History, U.S. Government) and a simple CA History textbook (California: An Interpretive History 10th Edition by James J. Rawls) and Cliff's Quick Review for Economics. If you use this CSET guide in conjunction with the subject textbooks and guides, I'm confident anyone can pass the CSETS, challenging as they are.
There are way better resources online. This book was seemed scattered and written poorly. I'd recommend using Study.com instead. It costs $40 a month but you will get way more out of it and hopefully be motivated to finish studying within one month. YouTube has an amazing amount of videos that are helpful. I felt this book was time consuming and not very helpful.
Let me preface this by saying I just passed all 3 social science sections on my first try, and I wanted to wait until getting my results to review the book. This book is a good starting point for study, but it definitely should not be your only tool. It provides a good overview of the important topics but it does not delve into enough detail or connect events in the ways that you will need to understand for the test. There are codes to videos within the book, and the videos are detailed and helpful, but only some sections have them.Another criticism/concern I have for the book is that in a lot of sections there are typos and formatting errors. In the pictures I've included you can see sections where the headers are not bolded, sections with typos in the dates, repetition, and at one point on california history Marbury v. Madison was randomly pasted in, which suggests some serious oversight. Some sections in the book are really well put together, but others seem to have been arranged by someone who just didn't care.Again, this us a good starting tool, and it definitely did help me pass my first try, but I also used the Mometrix flash cards and watched the entire Crash Course Us history, world history, and economics series.
As many of the other reviews for this study guide claim, this book is best used in conjunction with other materials that go more in depth. In studying for the CSET social science, I also used a World History textbook and an AP US History prep book next to this guide, which helped immensely (and I don't think I would have been successful without them). I also utilized lots of Crash Course videos on Youtube (especially for the CSET social science III), and did practice tests online (Teachers Test Prep, etc.). While I had VERY little time to prep (about a week for each subtest), I miraculously passed all three on the first try.Some pros of this guide:-condensed, summarized information-mostly follows the order of the CSET website's standards of what to know for the exam-easy to readSome cons:-grammatical errors, some subject errors (I found that if something sounded incorrect, I often checked online to make sure)-while the order was mostly okay, I found that the book did not necessarily go in chronological order, which made it sometimes difficult to follow-do NOT use only this book to study for the CSET-the practice questions in the back are not like they would appear on the CSET (there is one massive practice test with questions from all three subtests mixed in)Overall, the study guide was decent but do yourself a favor and utilize other resources that are more detailed.
I got this book at the last minute to have several option in practice tests. It also reads like your history class notes, if you took notes that well. I passed all three parts of the CSET on the first go, using this book and one other. So it definitely gets four stars.
the book was not very helpful. As a matter of fact I felt so ripped off after I opened it up. It's a very thin book, with very little information on what to expect from your test. This book had so many little errors in Spanish, which I found hilarious seeing as how the exam is testing you over Spanish -_-. Do not waste your time or money. Just go straight to the exam website and take their practice exam and use their practice material. You'll be glad you did.
OK, I'm a little torn here. Overall, I'd say the guide covers almost everything, but nothing in depth at all. I just took the CSET in July and there were maybe 2 history questions that took place post WW2. I'm not joking. No cold war, no WW2, no vietnam, berlin wall, USSR... I could go on. I don't know if it's always like this but I definitely emphasized the last 100 years as being more relevant.The study guide has WAY too many typos to be published. Many times there aren't spaces between words, and there are also words that are flat out misspelled.I'm still giving this 3 stars because there are seriously a lack of resources to pass the social science tests. They don't make it easy on you to pass or prepare. I would like more sample questions, that would help. I don't care if there are 500 questions in there, the more the better. The CSET website itself gives you hardly anything.A little editing and tinkering would make this guide a lot better but if you've been out of school for 10 years, this just isn't enough.
Definitely purchase as another tool for the CSET but DON'T use this as your only tool. You'll need Barrons World History Volume I & II plus another book on US history. This is just a basic guide to give you an idea of the tremendous amount of info you'll need to know.
