I used this guide to familiarize myself with these two cities. The Rick Steve's guides are great at providing practical information about how to get around easily in these cities: hours, local customs and cuisines, tips on when to get tickets, how to avoid long lines, using the metro, local trains, even how to dial back to the US. It's an invaluable primer. I read and highlighted the kindle version, and regretted not buying this in paperback. While i took my e-reader to Madrid and did consult this guide, i found the electronic version slightly more difficult to use on-the-go than a hard copy. That's not a reflection on this book - just my preference for format. While the search feature is handy, i feel that reference books like this one are more accessible in hard copy. I wound up carrying a small Lonely Planet pocket guide to Madrid which contained a fold-out map in the back which i consulted constantly during my trip.
It's small enough to fit easily in a small cross body bag and has great updated and helpful information for sightseeing in Madrid and vecinities. From Madrid took day trips to Toledo and Segovia and this pocket guide was the perfect companion! The simplified maps help with finding the must-see's without the regular clutter of standard maps. A must-have companion for first-time visitors to Madrid!
GREAT choice to help you plan your Madrid-area trip. The book covers Madrid in detail and Toledo PLUS Segovia, Avila, and El Escoril. As usual, the sections on Transportation, Sights to See, Eating, and Sleeping are succinct and practical. Includes small but easy-to-read (and very helpful) hand-sketched city maps for each subject. Has a few black & white photos. Info is completely consistent with the research I have already done on these towns plus all the usual Rick Steve's insights. Very glad I bought it.
Compared to others similar, I rate it 5 stars. But the size limits the information. However, there is plenty of information for a several days in Madrid and Toledo. If you want more time or specialties, such as art or music or other culture, get a bigger book. I found Foders good in the past, but have not got Foders in many years. It probably would suffice to a couple of weeks or more in Madrid and Toledo.
What a great book. I studied it and highlighted it before we went to Spain. I also did some research online and we didn't need to book with any of the expensive tours and we made our own itinerary following our own time. We loved the spontaneity of going where we want to go and not rushing the great sights to keep up with tours. What a great resource. I'm getting Rick Steve's other books when we want to tour other European countries.
Loved the self guided tours! Helped save a bunch of money. It was nice to have the info in the book and not have to rent a hand held tour guide. The walking tour around Madrid was fabulous and took us to all of the hidden gems. Loved going to the convent and purchasing the pastries from the cloistered nuns.
Great, as always with the Rick Steves books. I use the Kindle version on my iPad, as the maps are more readable that way, and it went everywhere with me. The Madrid walking tours were very useful, and the self-guided tour of the Royal Palace was a great supplement to the audio-guide. Full of informative background and history - for example, reading the story behind the Guernica gave so much more meaning to this moving painting. Advice on getting to Toledo, and round the city, very helpful. Don't leave home without it!
Every Rick Steves book that I have bought has contained at least one tip that is worth it's price for that alone. Whether it's 'time-saving' or 'money-saving' or 'energy-saving', he has some wonderful insider knowledge that is worth checking out. His books are not the prettiest (no color pictures), and the maps are sometimes not the best, but I always buy his book for any destination and use it in tandem with other guides.
