About the Author
Pierre Christin was born at Saint-Mandé in 1938. In addition to the ongoing Valerian series, Christin has written several other comics oneshots, including The City That Didn’t Exist, The Black Order Brigade and The Hunting Party, all illustrated by Enki Bilal. Among the many European comics artist he has collaborated with are Enki Bilal, Jacques Tardi, Alexis, Raymond Poïvet, Jijé, Annie Goetzinger, Daniel Ceppi, and François Boucq. This is his first collaboration with Olivier Balez. Olivier Balez is a longtime comics artist and children’s book illustrator who resides in Chile. He has illustrated work in virtually every genre of comics, collaborating with Florence DeCamp, Eric Corbeyran, and Pascale Fonteneau, among many others.

Christin's narrative is shaky at times, but is grounded by Balez's artwork, and to see Moses' story so lovingly illustrated is refreshing. What detracts from the reading experience are the factual errors that are scattered throughout the book (as highlighted by another reviewer, at one point the book incorrectly states the year the Verrazano Bridge was built, among other errors), as well as rather noticeable gaps in the story of Robert Moses.Both the decades-spanning tale of the completion of the Triborough Bridge, and how Moses toiled to create Jones Beach and reinvent Long Island, are oddly absent. The book also lacks a nuanced take on Moses relationship with Jane Jacobs. It simply states that Moses was bad, and Jacobs was good.While every telling of the Moses story is compared to The Power Broker, this illustrated version should be taken with a grain of salt compared to Caro's Pulitzer Prize winning biography. The author and his editor should have fact checked more, and worked to better tell the complex narrative of the latter half of Moses' career, which in this book represents an oversimplification of events.Overall, the book is worth the money for the artwork alone - If you want the definitive story of Moses, read Caro's The Power Broker, and Jackson & Ballon's Robert Moses and the Modern City.Author's note - I've studied Moses' legacy in both undergraduate and graduate school. I have my BA from Fordham University in both Political Science & Urban Studies, and my MA in Public Policy from Long Island's Stony Brook University. As a NYC resident/fan and admirer of Caro's magnificent book, THE POWER BROKER, I thought this would be a cool and original take on the Moses story. I was right! The artwork is wonderful even if the writing is "all over the place." I don't think the author, while admitting the complexities of his subject, ever made up his mind as to whether or not Moses was a hero, villain or Anti-hero (Incidentally, the Editor missed a typo or 'too'). Regardless, it's a handsomely designed and interesting book.
Great book / graphic novel about a highly controversial man. The art is fantastic, and the story gives a good overview of the career of Robert Moses.The book takes a more middle of the road view of his works, praising Moses for his successes and noting his notorious projects (Brooklyn/Battery bridge etc). This is in stark contrast to Caro’s 1100 page biography of Moses, which at times seems more like a hit piece.Looking back, many of his efforts were unsuccessful or divisive. But, as noted in his obituary: “Those who can, build. Those who can't, criticize.â€
These authors know very little about Robert Moses! There are many factual errors, there are innuendos and outright falsehoods printed in this book and there seems to be an almost total lack of historicity. Actually, I'm not sure that the author, in particular, has any right to make the claims that he does. I would be interested in what impelled him to write this book as his background seems so poorly suited to this kind of research!!
fun read and i love the comic book style. unfortunally there are quite a lot of inaccuracy about New York sites.
Meh. Not sure if this is the general style of graphic novels, but the dialogue and text was SO stiff. I'm also pretty sure there were some points at which the book was not entirely accurate. Very little criticism of how Moses work destroyed communities and set the stage for both white flight and urban decay. The decimation of neighborhoods like redhook, and those in the bronx cut off from their neighbors by Moses's highways. The artwork is great, but I don't think I would recommend the book to anyone too serious about the topic.
Wired as hell. Thought I was getting a bio, ended up with a graphic novel. Still captivating, though.
