I grew up in a cult that had its own religious text. We still had a bible, though it was highly edited, but it was almost never opened. Core stories like Noah, Abraham and Moses were taught by word of mouth, only for Jesus did we actually open the bible. Otherwise everything was from our unique text and the cults own history. Since escaping the cult I've been an atheist. Christians love debating me in my beliefs, I've been told many times that if only I'd read the bible, then I'd know the truth. One of them is a scholar and told me to get this version. It apparently has the best word use by meaning compared to the original Greek. This is my first non cult edited bible.
This has been the standard translation in every class I've taken in Seminary. Having experience with many translations, I find it to be the best blend of accuracy and readability, faithful to the earliest texts in Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament) and easily understandable to modern readers.
This is a bare-bones edition, with few notations. It's hard to read, so if your eyesight is challenged, you need to get something else.

The New Revised Standard Version is a late-twentieth-century updating of the venerable Revised Standard Version. This reviewer has become familiar with the NRSV as the base English-language text of the New Cambridge Bible Commentary, a project for which I am writing the volumes on the book of Isaiah.As a translation, the NRSV sticks to the center of the road. Traditionalists may dislike the move towards gender neutrality and the subsequent loss of the solitary singular in, for example, Psalm 1. Inclusive language advocates, on the other hand, may consider this a virtuous sacrifice.As an edition, the text is a crystal clear 'Oxbridge' style on a crisp page layout. As a paperback volume, it opens and bends easily--important qualities for a self-styled 'reader's edition'--yet without the fragility of some Bibles.Roman Catholic readers will appreciate the inclusion of the Deuterocanonical, or 'Apocryphal', books.The only out of the ordinary characteristic of this edition is the price, which for an OUP publication is exceedingly reasonable, if that is not an oxymoron.A good choice.
My favorite translation of the Bible. I use it in tandem with "Forward Day-by Day" in my personal daily morning Bible study.
