If you aren't paying attention to what Mather is telling us through his cyber threat books, the popular "Cyberstorm", or this followup, "Darknet", it's time you should. This is a cautionary tale of AI (artificial intelligence) gone to extremes, and Mather, as a cyber security expert in addition to being a first rate author, should know his stuff. Without giving away too much, we are presented with the story of an astonishingly intricate clandestine worldwide computer hell, populated by those in the deepest waters of the dark net that specialize in every crime you can imagine - murder, financial illegal wheeling and dealing that frankly makes the old insider trading problems through word of mouth ridiculously out of date and given the ability by banks of ultra powerful computer programs and servers, can conduct trades, sell, buy, short, etc. in microseconds before any trail can possibly be discovered, so swiftly and nearly invisibly the programs that are being used to make those willing to pay big bucks for the services very rich and all but totally immune from any threat of discovery. The other problem, one that has been discussed before, is a program that is so well crafted that it enables software and computers in various businesses to automanage and autocorrect their mistakes as they operate. Thus, if a program is powerful enough, human interaction is no longer necessary. The internet is infected by millions of viruses, programs and codes that are capable of literally EVERYTHING. With this as the setup, the book details one such investment company that has been programmed to the level that it is truly autonomous. It is designed to make money for its clientele, period. Having no emotions, no qualms about any means necessary to get what it is set up to do, it becomes a true global threat as more and more insidious people are involved. The book moves swiftly, and we get a very realistic idea of what can happen or may be happening in a computer society that has become totally dependent on the internet, thoroughly compromised its security and privacy, and all but eliminated anonymity on any scale. Think about it: my wife and I have a cat and dog, and they are available for inspection on vet computers and thus the internet worldwide. Now, Toasty the cat and Cocoa the dog don't worry about such things, but it shows you how invasive our cyber world is. "Darknet" is very well written and a good read on its own - what makes it more chilling is its warning to all of us.

A science fiction thriller, or a technothriller, take your pick. There are two strands to the story. In one, Jake finds himself in a hedge fund responsible for his boss's questionable financial dealings, and for a mafia boss's money Jake's boss has lost. The police are after Jake, the mafia is after Jake, and Jake has no idea why. Then Jake gets a letter from his friend Sean, which contains cryptic clues. Something really bad is going on. Meanwhile, in China, something similar is happening to Jin. Gradually, we learn how to make sense of Jake's cryptic clues, and Jin finally makes it to America, to get closer to Jake's problem, which eventually they learn is mediated through the darknet, another part of the internet where almost anything goes. Amongst further problems for Jake is an upgraded Murder Inc, where rewards are posted for assassinations. Jake and Jin are designated targets. The book is well-written, structurally sound, and moves with really quick action. The problem is novel, and more to the point, the attempted solution is rational, as is the response by the bad side. For me, there were only a few blemishes. The first is general; the evil side is so powerful and Jake and Jin have so few resources they both should die fairly early into the story. If Sean is going to send a letter, he should include a statement as to what the enemy really is. If a policeman stands five paces behind a bad guy with a pistol drawn and aimed, the bad guy either surrenders or is shot. It takes surprisingly little time to pull a trigger! Finally, the bad guys are so powerful that the ending needs something approaching deus ex machina to reach a conclusion. Nevertheless, this is a great story, well worth the five stars, and one of the clearly better thrillers I have read for some time.

I wanted to try some techno/cyber thrillers and this was one that I selected--and much better than The Circle by Dave Eggers.Darknet had some interesting twists, ones I did not see coming. This is really saying something because I have read a whole lot of books and very little surprises me anymore. The pace was pretty fast and I actually read it straight through in less than a day. (Caution: I am a fairly fast reader.) The author gave enough technical information to make the plot believable without going overboard and boring the reader. In fact, if anything, there could have been a bit more of the technical detail. The author rightly made this a globally set book. Yet the ways in which the various characters know each other, far-flung around the world as they were, seemed entirely believable. This is true even of the Native-American angle, which was quite clever. The backstory on the main characters was woven nicely. And to his credit, I do not think any character was dropped along the way. (Cannot say the same for such blockbuster authors as John Grisham, among others.) So, Kudos to Matthew Mather! Also, his cautionary tale is a good one. Our technology is outpacing our ability to deal with it reasonably. And Darknet points this out all too well.

I really tried to like it because the topic interests me, and I have some experience with it. However, the pace, the plot, the characters and the dialogue were too much to bear, and the book therefore seemed infernally long. There were numerous improbable escapes, and the ending was the most improbable of all. Mr. Mather is unquestionably popular, but I won't be reading any more of his work. I gave him my time, and he wasted it.
