I briefly hesitated to buy this book only because I read Rory's wonderful blog closely over the last year and a half and didn't know if the material would be much different. However, I'm glad I purchased the book. I needed something positive and inspirational, and it is positive and inspirational--and the material IS different from the blog. He intentionally doesn't rehash material that he's shared previously on the blog, which I appreciate because I enjoyed reading about his younger years, not just because I wanted different material as a consumer. I think the book could have been even more thoroughly developed regarding his later childhood years (the ones he can remember the most) and mid-adulthood, and the end of the book is a bit abrupt, even though it concludes nicely. I assume that it is a bit abrupt not only because the last few years of his life are well-documented on the blog but also because he wants to respect his wife's privacy and dignity. As a reader, I understand both reasons. But, I still would have enjoyed reading more about his pre-Joey adulthood, as it would have been interesting and would have filled out the book a little more. I do enjoy a robust memoir.Rory's writing style is easy and pleasant, and it reads like he didn't fight the page or the words much in trying to tell his story clearly, which is enjoyable and which speaks of a natural storyteller and writer. I will likely read it again soon because his descriptions of his inner world when he was fighting to be a better man and to fulfill his life's purpose spoke to my current mindset. I need it, and I appreciate it.
I, too, followed Joey and Rory's story for the year prior to Joey's passing. I have been a follower of Bill & Gloria Gaither who reside in the same town where Joey grew up. So it was with great anticipation that I traveled to Myrtle Beach last fall for a Gaither even where Rory Feek was the keynote speaker. He did not speak a lot about Joey, but he told about his boyhood days and how difficult life was for his mom. It was a true pleasure to meet Rory and Hopie at their product booth. Indy was there too. She was quite a crowd pleaser.You should know that the audible version of this book was recorded by Rory. He considers that opportunity a special gift for him.This book is wonderful. It's a must read for anyone who was a fan of Joey+Rory plus it's also a testimony to God's hand at work in our lives.You won't be sorry if you read this wonderful, teary story.
My wife is the one who introduced me to the Rory+Joey story, keeping me updated on the couple's journey through marriage, stardom, parenthood, cancer, and an untimely death. We watched DVDs, listened to CDs, and rode the emotional rollercoaster. All along, though, I had that sneaking male suspicion that Rory was just too calm, too perfect, that we weren't getting the whole story. In fact, I was even hesitant to read this book after my wife finished it, afraid that it would be too simple and sweet. I wanted something deeper and more raw.Thankfully, Rory does give us a deeper look into his past and his own journey. By doing so, he won me over, finding camaraderie with another man and husband who has made mistakes but is also committed to his wife, family, and God. Rory shares some of his own mistakes, doesn't make excuses, and shows grace and forgiveness for others in his life--such as his mother, his ex-wife (before Joey), and so on. I would've loved to hear more about his daughters, since they've clearly had a lot to deal with in this whole process too, but that's their own story to tell if and when they choose.This Life I Live is an extraordinary story, and this couple's example is one that many have been encouraged and challenged by. I'm glad my wife brought me along for the ride, and Rory's honesty and candor only makes me more appreciative of God's working in our lives.
I happen to be an enormous fan of this beautiful Christian couple. Their story is filled with the feeling of love, not only for each other, but also for God and family. Rory writes from his heart about his difficult childhood and upbringing. He also voices doubt about his own faith, just as many Christians do. In meeting and marrying Joey, he was given a gift from God....someone to share and grow his faith- walk with . Joey's goodness shone from her face, her faith in God was so absolute. Rory learned to love himself and more importantly, God, because of Joey's complete love of God. I was devastated when I learned of her illness and realized the pain that both she and Rory would face. Read this book to learn about strength, love and faith....it is a touching and glorious story!
Having lost my husband of 45 years in September of 2016 I am still in the midst of my grieving process and am reading a lot more right now. I expected to find some similarities in our stories as my husband who was always healthy and active was diagnosed with Cancer went the chemo and radiation route and was terminal but just wanted a little more precious time. But I did not expect it to be such an easy inspiring comforting read. Thank you so much for writing this and sharing even more of your love and life experiences. I am changed after reading it and the references to a higher power in God and helping me be more able to appreciate that my love for my husband will always remain strong and that others understand you understand .Your masterful command of verse and your honest revelations of your life experiences are special and thought provoking and I enjoyed this book immensely. Thank you again.
