Author Mary Ellen Gilliland has published 11 books, most of them on Colorado high country gold rush history and hiking trails. She is the author of a companion to The New Summit Hiker, a guidebook for the Vail, Colorado area called The Vail Hiker. Gililand is an avid hiker and enjoys pointing out wildflowers, wildlife areas, fishing lakes, vista points and other trail features to her readers.

Book condition exactly as described, delivering ahead of schedule, couldn’t be easier!
A good concept, but in my view the material in this book was outdated and the maps too basic for use as a stand alone guide. Online resources provided more interesting and useful material and maps for our trip.

Very descriptive and helpful. I loved using it while I lived in the area. It's a great tool to pick up if you are taking a trip Summit county.
We tried hiking Wheeler Lakes, one of the hikes, in the book. The directions to get there is off by 2 miles!! The ratings of a couple hikes seemed off. For example, Mt. Royal to Masontown is short but steep. In the book it's easy-moderate. Maybe because it's short. But it's steep and definitely not "easy" for the little kiddos. I would hike this with the younger kids with reservation. And the hike to Mt. Royal is very steep and the rating is just "More difficult". The description of the hikes is not easy to read either. Overall, you're much better off looking up hikes and getting directions on-line.
Lots of great hikes of varying levels of difficulty, and fabulous directions. HIghly recommend this and the Vail Hiker by the same author.
My husband and I have chosen several of the hikes included by Ms. Gilliland and, as neophyte hikers, have found them very enjoyable. Most importantly, we have come to depend on both the times given for the hikes as well as the difficulty ratings. I would not hesitate to take a hike from this book if it sounded attractive to me -- I'd know I could count on it being just as described
