Review

Praise for Uncommon People “[A] wonderful portrait of rock stardom . . . Hepworth’s writing is sublime.” ―Daily Mail“The effect is that of faded, evocative, partisan Polaroids scattered from the memory of one obsessive music fan . . . Uncommon People emerges as part of the drive to capture, analyse and archive key moments in musical history that might otherwise vanish from popular memory before we know it.” ―Observer“David Hepworth [is] one of the best music writers around . . . Thoughtful and stylishly told tales.” ―David Lister, iNews“The research in Uncommon People is fantastic and its fascinating detail will entertain even those who think they’ve read it all before . . . Hepworth’s knowledge and enthusiasm for music makes it a hugely enjoyable and informative reflection on the days when rock ruled the world . . . It feels like one of those evenings when you sit with your friends and talk about the music you love. Uncommon People leaves you with the same companionable glow.” ―Express (UK)“[A] zippily entertaining portrait of the men and women with flawed outsized personalities who . . . belong to a fallen age of rock stardom.” ―Will Hodgkinson, The Times (London)“[A] colourful, richly marinated survey of the phenomenon of the rock star between the mid-1950s and mid-1990s . . . Hepworth is, in many ways, a dream author. Not only does he know his stuff . . . but he is alert to broader social and cultural trends . . . [His] chapters yield something of the satisfaction of a sharply observed, neatly shaped short story.” ―David Kynaston, The Guardian“Marvellous . . . The age of the rock star is over, and Hepworth’s never-less-than fascinating book is a more than fitting farewell.” ―Dylan Jones, GQ“David Hepworth is such a clever writer . . . Uncommon People is a gorgeous read, celebratory and bittersweet, both pep rally and memorial, throbbing with insight and incident.” ―Julie Burchill, Spectator“This book is a kind of elegy for a glorious but passing phase in entertainment history . . . brims with insight, humour and a certain genial astringency.” ―Stuart Maconie, Mail on Sunday“The effect is that of faded, evocative, partisan Polaroids scattered from the memory of one obsessive music fan . . . Uncommon People emerges as part of the drive to capture, analyse and archive key moments in musical history that might otherwise vanish from popular memory before we know it.” ―Barbara Ellen, The Guardian

I read a lot of music related books, and I really enjoyed this one. I found the premise of the book interesting, and I liked that each chapter is roughly five pages focusing on a specific year over a 40 year period. Every reader will probably quibble with at least one of his selections to discuss for any given year, and some might be put off that a particular musician or band is used for two different years. Some readers will already be familiar with the background of some of his selections as well. My advice is keep an open mind. I particularly enjoyed his writing style, and I found David's book to be a very insightful read.

I read '1971 Never a Dull Moment' and followed that up by reading this book. I really enjoy the style of the writing in both books where the author picks a month in the case of '1971' or an artist in 'The Rise and Fall of the Rock Stars'. For the 1970s, a decade that I was too young to really experience, 'The Rise and Fall of the Rock Stars' really puts the music of the era in context and by referring to other artists and developments that were concurrent I think I have been left with a greater appreciation of the music itself. I would say this holds true for me in reading about the 1980s as well, an era I thought I remembered better than I actually have - one forgets so many details about events, which bands released which songs at which time and so on. The author makes you want to know more about bands you may never have heard of such as Badfinger or Nick Drake. The author is clearly in control of his material and writes in an informative and entertaining manner. I greatly enjoyed this book as I had his first.

Not that impressed, somewhat interesting read, but just stated a lot of facts and info about Rockers that most people already know. I found nothing “ insightful” about the book

Love this book! The concept of a day in the life for each year of the era of the rockstar is well-chosen, well-delivered and illuminating. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in pop culture, music and entertainment history. Cant recommend highly enough!

Cleverly written and endlessly fascinating, this book traces the evolution of rock stars from 1955 to 1995, and explains why they no longer exist.

Great read! Super cool format, too. Loved it!

Excellent.

The history of rock & Roll since the late 50’s until today! Amazing!
